Our communities will celebrate Veterans Day on Nov. 11 to honor the men and women in our Armed Forces. Many have given the ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedom. For some, injuries sustained during their service have left them disabled. Since 2009, banks in Missouri, their employees and communities and MBA association members have raised more than $623,000 to support Segs4Vets, the designated charity of the Missouri Bankers Association.
What is Segs4Vets?
is a volunteer program that provides Segway mobile transporters to help severely injured veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. The cost to provide a Segway is about $10,000 while the cost for an ALLY chair, which is a modified Segway chair, is $15,000. For every $1 donated, 98 cents supports Segs4Vets mission — empowering injured soldiers to live independently.
7 Segsways In 2019
It’s a prime number. It’s the number of days in a week. It’s a lucky number for some. It’s the number of books in the Harry Potter series from J.K. Rowling. And, it’s the title of the 1995 crime thriller starring Springfield native Brad Pitt.
This fall, however, seven takes on a new meaning.
“Seven is key to this year’s Segs4Vets campaign,” said Max Cook, president and CEO of the Missouri Bankers Association. “We can purchase seven Segways for $77,000 if we reach our 2019 goal, and this will push Segs4Vets donations from MBA and our members pass $700,000!”
MBA’s 11th Annual Segs4Vets Day is Friday, Nov. 8. MBA encourages banks participating in this year’s campaign to share photos of their Segs4Vets activities on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram and to tag MBA (mobankers) and to use these hashtags — #7Segways #Segs4Vets77k and #Segs4Vets700k — in their posts. The association will recognize 2019 donors at the Executive Management Conference on Dec. 5 in St. Louis and in the December issue of The Missouri Banker
